Government Seeks Clarification from Telegram, Signal Over Username Feature
  • PublishedJuly 3, 2026

The Government of India has sought explanations from Telegram and Signal over their username-based messaging feature, following its decision to prevent WhatsApp from introducing a similar capability.

According to sources, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued notices to both Telegram and Signal, seeking details on how the platforms are addressing concerns related to fraud, impersonation, and user safety.

The username feature allows users to connect with others without sharing their mobile phone numbers by creating a unique public identifier. While the feature is designed to enhance privacy, authorities are examining whether it could also be misused for impersonation, scams, or other fraudulent activities.

The government has specifically asked Telegram and Signal to explain the safeguards they have put in place to prevent abuse of the feature and protect users from identity-related fraud.

The move comes after the government halted WhatsApp’s proposed rollout of a similar username feature, citing concerns over potential misuse. With Telegram and Signal already offering the functionality, the government is now reviewing the security and compliance measures adopted by these platforms.
