Biometric authentication is gaining rapid traction among UPI users, with over 611 million transactions worth ₹25,416 crore recorded in June, reflecting growing preference for faster and more convenient digital payments.

The feature allows users to authorise UPI payments using their smartphone’s fingerprint or facial recognition for both Person-to-Person (P2P) and Person-to-Merchant (P2M) transactions. It is also available for RuPay Credit Card on UPI, enabling PIN-free credit card payments.

NPCI said the technology reduces dependence on UPI PINs, speeds up transaction completion and improves payment success rates as more banks and UPI apps roll out support.

“The growing adoption of biometric authentication reflects the increasing preference among UPI users for payment experiences that are simple and efficient,” said Sohini Rajola, Executive Director – Growth, NPCI, adding that adoption is expected to rise further as the ecosystem expands.
