Semicon India Programme Gains Momentum with 10 Approved Projects; IT Sector Revenue Touches USD 283 Billion
India’s push to build a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem is gathering pace, with the government approving 10 major projects under the Semicon India Programme, alongside the country’s IT sector recording revenues of USD 283 billion, underscoring the growing strength of the technology and electronics landscape.
Inspired by the Prime Minister’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the twin goals of “Make in India, Make for the World,” the semiconductor development strategy aims to create a comprehensive domestic ecosystem spanning design, fabrication, assembly, testing, packaging, and module manufacturing.
Recognising the foundational role of semiconductors in driving economic growth and digital transformation, the Centre launched the Semicon India Programme with a total outlay of Rs. 76,000 crore to promote semiconductor and display manufacturing in the country.
So far, the government has approved 10 projects with planned investments of about Rs. 1.6 lakh crore. These include two fabrication units and eight packaging and assembly facilities. The portfolio covers a range of advanced capabilities such as CMOS (silicon) fabrication, silicon carbide fabs, advanced packaging, and memory packaging. Several of these projects are at different stages of implementation, with pilot production already underway in four units.
The programme has also placed strong emphasis on nurturing India’s design and innovation ecosystem. Twenty-four chip design projects have been supported through startups, with 16 completing tapeouts and 13 securing venture capital funding, indicating rising investor confidence in India’s semiconductor design capabilities.
To strengthen the talent pipeline, the government has enabled access to Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools for 350 universities, benefiting nearly 65,000 engineers and students and helping build a skilled workforce for the sector.
The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has been established as the nodal agency to appraise, recommend and oversee semiconductor projects. The mission brings together industry experts and representatives from multiple ministries and departments to guide policy and implementation.
Officials said the twin progress in semiconductor manufacturing and the IT sector’s strong revenue performance signals India’s growing stature as a global technology hub, with efforts now focused on accelerating execution and scaling domestic production to meet both domestic and international demand.
For IT Sector, The Government of India is actively promoting its growth, especially in smaller towns and cities. The performance of this sector over the last 5 years and estimates for 2024-25, as published by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), is mentioned below:
