In a significant development for India’s rapidly evolving private space ecosystem, GalaxEye has successfully launched its first satellite under Mission Drishti, setting a new benchmark as the largest satellite ever built by a private Indian company.

The launch represents a pivotal shift in India’s approach to Earth observation, underscoring the growing role of private players in delivering advanced space-based capabilities. It also serves as a strong proof-of-concept for recent space sector reforms, signaling a transition from experimental missions to the deployment of sovereign, operational systems with strategic applications.

At the core of the satellite’s innovation is the integration of the world’s first commercial “OptoSAR” sensor—a technology that combines optical imaging with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) on a single platform. This hybrid capability enables persistent, all-weather monitoring, overcoming limitations posed by cloud cover, darkness, or adverse weather conditions. Such advancements are expected to significantly enhance applications in national security, border surveillance, and disaster response.

Lt. Gen. A.K. Bhatt (Retd.), Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), hailed the achievement as a defining moment for the sector. “The successful launch of GalaxEye’s first satellite under Mission Drishti marks a pivotal shift in India’s approach to Earth observation. It signals a move toward sovereign, all-weather surveillance capabilities critical for national security and disaster response,” he said.

He further emphasized the importance of the OptoSAR breakthrough, noting that only a handful of global players have been able to seamlessly integrate optical and SAR technologies. “What stands out is not just the technology, but its broader impact on downstream applications, where timely, decision-grade insights are becoming central to value creation in the space economy,” Bhatt added.

The successful deployment of Mission Drishti highlights India’s ambition to build a robust, self-reliant space ecosystem driven by private enterprise, and positions GalaxEye among a select group of global innovators pushing the boundaries of Earth observation technology.
