Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-I orbital rocket along with the company’s new state-of-the-art Infinity Campus, marking a major leap in India’s rapidly expanding private space sector. The event underscores the country’s strategic shift toward a vibrant NewSpace economy driven by policy reforms, public–private collaboration and deep-tech innovation.

Skyroot, which made history in 2022 with its successful launch of Vikram-S, has now progressed to its first orbital-class vehicle, positioning the Hyderabad-based startup among the global contenders in the small-satellite launch market. The newly inaugurated campus is designed to support high-rate manufacturing, with the capacity to produce one orbital rocket per month — a capability that places India firmly on the map as a competitive global hub for space manufacturing and launch services.

Welcoming the development, Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (Retd.), Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), said: “The unveiling of Skyroot’s Vikram-I orbital rocket and the Infinity Campus is a powerful reaffirmation of India’s NewSpace vision, where policy reforms, public investment and private innovation are pulling in the same direction. Skyroot’s journey from Vikram-S to Vikram-I shows how Indian startups are now building end-to-end launch capabilities for the global small-satellite market, easing the load on ISRO and expanding national capacity. The new facility’s ability to produce an orbital rocket every month underlines how India is moving from being a launch destination to a competitive manufacturing and services hub in the global space value chain. This milestone is emblematic of the broader private ecosystem that is emerging across rockets, satellites, applications and services, and will be central to realising India’s ambition of a much larger, innovation-led space economy in the coming decade.”

The announcement comes at a time when India’s private space industry is witnessing unprecedented momentum, propelled by policy liberalisation, investment inflows, and active industry engagement. Skyroot’s developments contribute directly to India’s goal of expanding its share in the global space economy and nurturing a self-reliant, innovation-led ecosystem capable of delivering world-class space solutions.

With Vikram-I entering the final stretch toward its debut orbital mission, India’s private spaceflight story enters an ambitious new chapter — one defined by indigenous capability, accelerated manufacturing, and a growing role in shaping the future of global space access.

“We congratulate our fellow industry player Skyroot Aerospace on reaching this important milestone with the unveiling of Vikram-I. Having reliable and indigenous access to orbit is fundamental, not just for the launch sector but for the entire downstream industry that builds practical applications using space data. Vikram-I will help boost India’s private space sector capabilities by enabling faster, more affordable satellite deployment. This reduces barriers for businesses working in defense, disaster management, environmental monitoring and infrastructure. With this capability, the downstream sector can accelerate delivering impactful services and strengthen India’s position as a serious global player in space technology.”
